A Bit-o-History

Yesterday evening I took Bumblebee for a walk. It was just the two of us. Eric and Cordelia were warm and snug in our home, waiting for us to return. The air was cool and crisp and the moon was out just after sunset.

Photobucket

I breathed in the cool air, a nice relief from the dry heated air we all breathe throughout the winter. The streets were empty and quiet. I could see smoke coming out of chimneys and lights on in houses. Bumblebee had a jaunty step, yes it was definitely jaunty. Anyway, I just had a moment out there on my walk a nice moment of deep quiet, appreciation and a sense of connectedness. I love those moments.

Later that evening we went over to my parent's house for dinner. My mom made a delicious dish of wild rice and butternut squash. Eric and I relaxed as my parents lavished attention of Cordelia.

I took a moment to look through the worn and weathered book you see below. Yes, it's held together with Christmas tape...not sure why, but it certainly adds a seasonal touch. My grandmother brought the book with her when she was in town last month.

Photobucket

The book is an old Norwegian Bible. From the early 19th century. The tape was a later addition, in case you were wondering.

Photobucket

Back in the day most families recorded their histories in the family bible and mine was no different. The blank pages in the front and back are completely covered in family history. Birth dates, death dates, marriages and more were all meticulously recorded over the years. The earliest date I found was 1815! What an amazing thing to still have in our family. Does your family have something like this?

Around This Time of Year

Twelve years ago I was friends with Eric, just friends. We had started to spend more time together in the fall of 1997 and it was becoming clear to both of us that we were really the best of friends. Eric would come over to my parent's house (we were still in high school) and we would sit in my room for hours and talk and laugh until it was time for him to go. I spent pretty much every spare moment with him.

Around Thanksgiving of that year I had begun to suspect that it was more than just a friendship we had been building. I wasn't quite sure how to proceed with this unique fellow who had somehow become quite important to me. I suspected that he felt the same way.

On Thanksgiving day of 1997 I was headed out of town for a retreat in Colorado. My bus was to leave from Las Cruces that evening. I wanted to see Eric again before I left town so I called him up and asked if it was OK if I stopped by to drop off a jacket of his, it was. I drove out to his parent's house. His family had finished up their Thanksgiving meal and they were hanging out. I didn't stay long, just a few moments really, but it was then that I could tell things were changing for Eric too. I knew we were ready to be more that just pals.

That night I caught my bus, headed for Estes Park. The bus drove through part of the night before hitting a blizzard just over Raton Pass on the Colorado/New Mexico border. Our bus was diverted into the town of Trinidad where we soon found that all of the hotels were full and they were redirecting people to different shelters. I ended up spending the night and the next day in an elementary school in Trinidad. The school was full of random people who had gotten stuck on the Interstate, including many folks who had been headed to a dog show. So, it was nothing short of a zoo in that school. I remember finding a quiet corner with a friend and we passed the time chatting. My conversation kept returning to Eric, I couldn't stop talking about him as a matter of fact. That night as I attempted to sleep on the cold floor of the school I had made my mind up, I was going to bust a move when I got home...if I was ever to escape that blizzard.

Eventually I did make it home. I didn't get an opportunity until the 5th of December, but I always think about the start of our relationship around this time of year.

Thanksgiving Review

Yesterday was Thanksgiving. Once again Eric and I tossed away our history degrees and decided to celebrate the festivities based on the notion of being thankful. Eric's parents are in town and they came over for a vegan feast as well as plenty of cuddle time with their sweet granddaughter. My family was out of town, celebrating with family in another Wyoming town.

Photobucket

I started out early baking pumpkin pie. I made the recipe from The Joy of Vegan Baking and it turned out wonderfully. Once I had some success under my belt I dove right in and spent much of the day cooking up a storm. Eric helped by keeping Cordelia happy and entertaining his parents.

Maria @ Thanksgiving

Dinner was a success and we all left the table with full bellies. Our menu included: stuffed butternut squash, potatoes and gravy, rolls, a vegetable pot pie, cranberry sauce and something else that has skipped my mind. We sat around chatting and enjoying each other's company for the rest of the day. Eric disappeared for a bit and returned with a beautiful bouquet of flowers, thanking me for cooking. What a guy!

Charmed By My Own Self

Last night I was looking through a pile of papers from when I was in grade school. My mother saved a ton of stuff. I like to look through the papers periodically and charm myself with my self. It's self indulgent, but what are you gonna do?

Photobucket
Yes, the title of this book does indeed read, Prepare Yourself to See Good Grade. Included in this pile of papers were a small book that I made about Montana, many drawings, a flyer from the "babysitter agency" I started and much more.

Photobucket
I also found a book that I wrote in second grade; it was 33 pages long. It was about a mouse named Amy.

I love looking through the papers and seeing what things have stayed the same and which things have changed. I have been writing and drawing from at least kindergarten. For me the two have been almost inextricably linked. I also discovered that lasagna has pretty much always been my favorite food, although I used to spell is lazana.

Do you have any of your treasures from when you were a wee little tyke?

Two Months and Barefoot Babies

At 9:44am Cordelia is two months old! I can't believe it. I seriously feel as though it's only been a couple of days. She is already a completely different little girl than the one we brought home. She feels more of this world, less ethereal. Does that make sense? I guess at first I felt like I was holding some mythic being, like a baby unicorn or something like that, but now she feels like our daughter.

Photobucket

She smiles, she knows her parents from anyone else. She coos and babbles. She is holding her head up (most of the time). She is just growing and changing every day. Eric and I have so much to be thankful for, and we are. We are thankful for all of those precious moments that we will cherish forever. Those quiet moments in the night, the small triumph of being able to comfort her, the smiles (oh those smiles).

Photobucket

You may be asking yourself who made that delightful shirt that Cordelia is wearing. Well, it is the work of Sophie whom many of you already know and love. If you are not familiar with her work or with Barefoot Babies just click here...or click the link on my sidebar any time.

Project

I recently mentioned that I need to get back to creating. By that I mean that I need to make some art and make some crafts. Well I have officially begun a sewing project.

Yesterday afternoon I took a decent nap with Cordelia. I am a napper who needs very specific circumstances in order to get a proper nap.
  1. I need for nobody in the house to be doing anything of interest. If there is anybody around, doing anything remotely interesting I will not be able to sleep.
  2. I need Cordelia to be napping.
  3. I need to have something really boring playing on TV. A fairly simple task as we don't have cable and TV is generally boring. I use the sound from the TV to block out other noises on the street that might distract me. Yesterday I snoozed to people ice dancing to some sort of concert.
  4. I need to be really really tired...not much of a problem right now.
  5. I need a free schedule.
So, I got to take a nap yesterday afternoon. It was lovely. I woke up feeling refreshed. Soon after I woke Cordelia up and then my mom came over. We went the the nearby fabric store and sifted through the fabrics. I picked up a few prints for the quilt I am making.

Photobucket

Then we all went out to my parent's house for dinner. I cut out the fabric while the guys watched sports and mom cuddled with Cordelia. Mom also loaded me up with tons of books on quilting.

Photobucket

After a lovely evening I came home excited to start my sewing project. I think this is going to be my best effort yet. My whole goal is to be a little more meticulous, slap dash is more my natural style, and really take the time to make this look like I mean business.

To celebrate that I am getting back in the creative game I decided to reward myself with a giant cup-o-hot cocoa. I put it into Eric's weird wizard/skeleton battle mug. Delicious!

As I Type

Last night was not the best night of sleep, but not the worst. I think I remember what it's like to sleep, but I don't really care. Cordelia was not crying or anything, just restless. I gave up trying to sleep at about 5 o'clock and had to clean up quite a mess, courtesy of Cordelia. In spite of this kind of bumpy start to the day I feel such deep gratitude...with just a hint of happy exhaustion.

Photobucket

As I type this up I can hear Cordelia and Eric cooing at each other in the background. They are laying right next to each other, Cordelia kicking her legs in the air (Eric's not) and they both just seem to be so happy. I can't think of a better way to start the day.

Wind and Holidays

Photobucket

Last night was so windy. I felt like the house was breathing in and out as the wind forced itself through every crack and crevice before subsiding. We were all snug inside, heater on, fresh banana bread (I'm obsessed) cooling in the kitchen. The wind always seems to signal the holidays to me. For the past several years we have journeyed to Wyoming, before we lived here, to celebrate the holidays. Our travels were always marked by sore wrists from holding the steering wheel against the wind. Now with the return of the wind I feel as though the holiday season has officially begun.

Eric and I have started our Christmas lists. We are planning our gifts for friends and family. Today I am headed over to work on a sewing project with my mother, it's intended to be a gift for a friend who is expecting her first child this holiday season.

Right now it's almost Thanksgiving. Eric's family will be coming up this week. They haven't yet had an opportunity to get up here and meet Cordelia, their 9th grandchild and second granddaughter. I am busy planning a vegan meal. Eric's parents have never had a vegan Thanksgiving so the pressure to impress is on. I will try and stick with the classics, just with a vegan twist.

Gettin' Rid of Stuff

Eric and I are living in a small house, very small. When we first moved to Wyoming we were having toruble finding a place that allowed our pets and we were under a serious time crunch to find a place to live. So we moved into our tiny little rental house. We have always planned to move to a larger space and we still do. I think we'll be moving within the next couple of months.

To fit ourselves into this smaller space we had to seriously downsize. Even now we are still a little crowded into our house. Nothing makes me want to downsize like being confronted with all of our stuff. There's no place to hide it here in this house. So Eric and I are methodically going through all of our posessions and asking these questions:
  • Do we need it?
  • Do we use it?
  • Do we really love it?
If we can't answer yes to any of these questions than the item has to go. It just makes sense. Who wants a house full of stuff that they only kind of like and never use? Anyway, my only hold out has been books. I love books. I love to read. I have a ridiculous amount of books. The thing is, I know where there is a building that holds tons of books that I can read any time...the library. So, last night I bit the bullet and downsized my book collection. The only books I have kept are ones that have special meaning to me, not just the words, but that specific book.

Photobucket

Let me tell you, I cleared up so much space. I can't believe how much better it feels to just let go! I seriously purged a mountain of books.

Photobucket

Now when we move we can feel even better about our space, rather than filling it up. Plus our current space feels lighter already. What have you done to simplify your space lately?

My Yesterday

I don't know about you, but I am a bit of a voyeur. I suppose you must be if you're a blog reader. So I thought I'd share my yesterday with you.

I woke up at 5:30 and fed and changed Cordelia. We snuggled on the couch until about 6:30 when Eric woke up. We began the process of getting ready for the day. Getting ready -in no particular order- consists of breakfast, packing Eric's lunch, orange juice, taking care of the animals, etc.

Photobucket
Morning Walk
Later, after Eric had gone to work and I had posted my blog and gotten ready. Cordelia, Bumblebee and I took a walk. The weather has been warm enough for the three of us to get out and wander the neighborhood.

While on our walk we were greeted by a dog that hopped out of a car. Bumblebee was overjoyed. The dog's human came running over and he tried to apologize to me while still talking on his cell phone, with a cigarette in his mouth. The result was that I wasn't sure when he was talking to me and the person on the other end of the phone seemed to have the same problem. I thought he was telling to me about his dog, but quickly realized that he was talking on the phone to someone about his medical condition. Before realizing this I responded to him. Then he looked at me like I was crazy. Then a gust of wind blew Cordelia's blanket into the air, we got tangled as Bumblebee spun to continue playing with the dog. It was all very awkward. So we quickly shuffled off.

Photobucket
Lunch
After returning home from the walk I realized Cordelia had fallen asleep in the carrier. I decided to seize the moment and just picked up the house and prepared lunch for myself. At some point she ended up in my arms as I was trying to finish lunch, this is how many a meal goes down.

Photobucket
Afternoon nap
Lunch transitioned into an afternoon nap for Cordelia and Bumblebee. Later Eric came home early and we headed to the doctor's office for my final check up. All is well. The doctor was so kind and we expressed our gratitude for everything he has done for our family.

After that we ran to the store and did some grocery shopping and bought a vacuum. We were pushing our cart through the store, stacked with a baby in a car seat and a vacuum. It hit us, we're grown up. When did this happen? I think we must counteract this with another fort night soon.

Photobucket
Dinner
We made it home and I put away groceries while I listened to Eric and Cordelia making sweet cooing sounds at each other in the other room. Then I whipped up a quick dinner of whole grain pasta and a big salad.

Photobucket
Eric and Bumblebee
We then did dinner and a movie, eating our meal as we watched a movie. Who knows what Bumblebee was up to.

Photobucket
Cordelia sound asleep
Cordelia was falling in and out of sleep for most of the evening. Eventually she succumbed and fell into a deep sleep.

Photobucket
Conversation
After Cordelia was asleep Eric and I sat around talking until we were too tired to talk. Then off to sleep.

What did you do?

White Sands

Have you ever been to or heard of White Sands National Park? I have. Actually I lived right next to it for many years. White Sands is down in New Mexico. It's a desert of pure white sand. When I first moved to NM as a teen girl I was completely impressed by the seemingly endless desert of white dunes, they looked like snow covered hills. For northerners the roads, made of firmly packed sand looked like ice covered streets.

Photobucket

When you get out there the sand is stunning. If you are there during the day in the summer you soon realize that it is hot as Hades and it's pretty much time to skeedadle.

Photobucket

The real time to visit the park is at sunset. The temperature is just right and New Mexico sunsets are truly amazing.

*Bonus bit-o-info- When Eric and I were dating we would watch the sunset every Sunday as we ate a new type of fruit*

Photobucket
The absolute best time to visit is during a full moon. The park is open late on full moon nights because the white sand reflects the light of the moon and it is just too beautiful. Locals love to run at full speed and jump off the top of the dunes. It's really fun. Some people will lie and say that it's cool to sled there, but it really isn't.

Anyway, if you are ever bored and want to see something amazing, it's really worth the effort!

Grandpa George

I never got to meet my dad's father. His name was George. Even though we've never met I've always felt as though I've had a relationship with him.

Photobucket

When I was little I would talk to him, look through his wallet and wonder what he was like. I knew he was a farmer, that he was in World War II, but much of this man remained a mystery to me.

Soon, my aunt Karen will be bringing some of his possessions for Eric to research. I can't wait to learn more about this man who has always been so very much alive to me. More than anything I am so thankful that Cordelia will get to know her grandparents and even her great grandparents and one great great grandmother!

Life's a Gas

Yesterday afternoon was spent blissfully snuggling with my sleeping daughter. Quiet and peaceful.

Photobucket
We were curled into a little nest in the corner of the couch. I was reading a magazine in between long periods of baby gazing. Bumblebee snuggled up next to us. We were the picture of serenity.

Eric came home right as the sun was setting. He got in some sweet smiles and snuggle time from Cordelia before it happened...

What happened you may be wondering...well it was not the picture of serenity. Out of nowhere Miss Cordelia was stricken with one of those mystery afflictions that so upset babies. We go through the checklist:
  • Hungry? No
  • Poopy? No
  • Sleepy? No
  • Bored? No
Then we're out of ideas. What else could be upsetting the little lady? Her howls grew louder and her lip quivered and turned down in just such a way that we were both charmed and heartbroken. Finally we settled on gas as the reason for her upset. Now I don't know about you, but I feel like many a baby cry has been blamed on gas. I'm not really sure how unsettling gas is to a baby, but we just accept that it's probably at the root of the problem.

We tried everything to get the little lady to calm. She would quiet for a bit and then she would bubble over in a new wave of baby fury. I can't blame her, it must be annoying to have such limited means of communication. Cordelia really cries very little, so when it does happen we are quite shocked and probably overreact. Our hearts break as her mournful little wails tug at our heartstrings.

Photobucket
Finally, through some miracle Eric was able to calm her with some sort of mysterious powers. He spent the rest of the night rocking her and speaking softly, possibly out of fear.

Photobucket
Nurse Bumblebee seemed to be genuinely interested in assisting us as we tried to calm Miss Cordelia. Anytime she could she attempted to lick Cordelia's head. The rest of the time she just sort of hovered around, waiting for her time to shine.

Photobucket
The cats seemed completely oblivious if not slightly annoyed.

After it was all over I was pretty happy that I have such a radical (yep I must use the word) husband. Eric and I really work well as a team, each offering to help the other out as we tried to help our little lady with her gas. So yes, as Marc Bolan ( of T-Rex) would say Life's a Gas.

Simplicity

Photobucket
I've been giving a lot of thought to simplicity lately. I feel like my life has become increasingly more simple and more enjoyable as a result. I have been slowly letting distractions fall to the wayside, to be forgotten. I know I am not alone in this sentiment. I think simplification is a drawn out process for someone like myself. Slowly I let go of things that are cluttering my mind, my car, my habits, my home.

I long for a steady simplicity. I want to let go of those lingering distractions that keep me from really focusing in on what's important. I was wondering what you are doing in order to simplify your life?

Dinner

I often get asked about my meals and just what it is that we vegans eat. I did a little week of food blogging this summer, but I will occasionally post our meals as I am asked about our diet. Just a little catch up for those of you who don't know what a vegan diet is, it means that we don't eat, use or wear any animal products.

Here is a really simple meal that we had last night...

I made sloppy lentils, think sloppy joes, and seasoned and baked potato wedges. For the joes I cooked some lentils and then combined the lentils with onion, tomato, pickles, garlic, salt, ketchup (tomato sauce is good too, it's just whatever you've got on hand) and chili powder. You can really go wild with seasoning or toss in any veggies you like, but our supplies are a bit low. Serve it up on a toasted bun or roll.

Photobucket

For the potatoes I like to chop up a potato into thick wedges and olive oil then season it with whatever sounds good. Last night that meant garlic, chili powder, cumin, curry powder, salt and pepper. Then I put them on a baking sheet and toss them into the oven at 400 degrees and bake until they look good.

Back to it

Photobucket

I'm ready to get back to it. I have been in a bit of a glorious baby fog for the past couple of months. Now it's time to get back to some of the things that I enjoy beyond my new favorite hobby of hanging out with my little family. Crafts, painting, sewing (I'm just learning to become a better seamstress) and the video projects that Eric and I are working on for Andy Mason.

It's hard to tear myself away from Cordelia because she is so darn cute and because she needs constant attention, but I think that it will benefit the whole family if we start to do some of the things that make us the people that we are. Eric has gotten back into bowling. Did I ever tell you that he has a custom bowling ball named Monster? I am looking for a few craft ideas that are not too time consuming or that can be done in increments. Do you have any ideas?

I would love to make some Christmas presents for friends and family who might appreciate a handmade gift. I would also love to make some baby clothes. My mom used to sell baby clothes she made, they were really cute. I remember after Sam was born she would sew in the family room while Sam napped. I would chat with her while I watched Saved by the Bell. She managed to be quite productive and I think it's time I follow in her footsteps.

Right now I am taking tentative steps as I hate to miss a moment with Cordelia and Eric, but I think it's time that I take just a slice of time to create again.

A Really Bad Joke

Remember when I had the swine fly a few weeks ago? Yeah, that wasn't fun. The flu comes on with little warning. The morning that I got sick started out just fine, but I think maybe I had some pre-swine flu delirium and here is why...

The morning that I got sick I sent out text messages (my mom taught me to text) and called Eric with a joke that I thought was incredibly clever. Let me remind you that this is my idea of a good joke. Anyway, I thought the joke was awesome at the time, but now I suspect that it was born in the pre-swine flu crazies.
Well, judge for yourself.

Q: What is a cow's favorite Spanish language card game?
Prepare yourself, it's bad!

A: Moouno

I warned you!

Bumblebee and the Missing Chinese Take Out

So Bumblebee has taught Eric and I a lot about just how smart dogs can be. Sometimes I think she is a complete fool when she looks at me blankly as I offer her a treat, but I remind myself that she must have some greater plan. Seriously, the dog can scheme. Let me tell you a tale (I don't think I've shared it on the blog before, but forgive me if I've repeated myself)...

take out

This story takes place a few years ago; I was cleaning out the fridge and hidden away in a back corner was a forgotten box of take out rice. I couldn't even recall how long it had been there so I tossed it into the garbage. Later, Eric and I were out running errands or whatever and Bumblebee got into the trash, something she rarely does. When we came home she looked quite guilty as we spotted the trash all over the kitchen floor. I cleaned it up, but I didn't think to take an inventory of the trash.

We went on with our evening and it was quite some time before we realized that Bumblebee had done more than just break into the trash can. She had enacted a plan. We noticed that she kept sneaking behind a chair in the living root. We first assumed that she was just looking for a place to lay down, but then we realized that she was hustling behind this chair-looking guilty the entire time-and then walking away. Finally we looked behind the chair and discovered her plot. She had taken the rice and the box and had hidden it behind a chair and was grazing on it like a snack. What a sneaky girl, she had stashed it for later!

Since then we have seen many examples of her scheming and manipulation. She's too smart...or so I think until I catch her doing some dumb like chewing on her leg. Although this may be a method she employs to throw us off her trail.

Photobucket

Do you have a scheming dog? Take my little test and find out.
  1. Does your dog hide Chinese takeout?
  2. Does your dog look guilty or as though he/she is up to something?
  3. Does your dog ever pretend that he/she has to go the bathroom and then when you take them outside they don't go to the bathroom, instead they play with a toy or sniff at a spot they had previously shown interest in?
  4. Has your dog ever stolen your bagel while you were in the bathroom?
OK, I don't really have a scoring system for the test, but I do have one more test for cats...

  1. Do you have a cat?
If you answered Yes to the cat test then the answer is YES your cat is scheming.

He's Famous-ish

Yesterday morning we received word that Eric was on the front page of the newspaper. We were not totally surprised because he'd been interviewed for the report, we just didn't know when it was coming out.

Photobucket

You may or may not know that Eric is working as a curator at a local museum. Recently he was brought a dog tag which had been unearthed nearby. Eric is a whiz at researching and he loves a challenge. So, he began to research the dog tag like the super sleuth he is.

Turns out it was from WWII. Eric was able to locate the man's surviving family members and reunite them with the dog tags. Funny enough he began his research through the back alleys and dark tunnels (so to speak) that researchers normally use, but he finally located the family through Facebook.

Anyway we think this might be the gateway into the world of the newscasters. We think that he is just steps away from an on air interview with our local anchors. I will keep you posted.

Peacock and Super Flea

Were you drawn in by the title of this post? I am kind of happy with it, this title and the post entitled Hair, Unitards and the Death of a Dream from a couple of days ago. I think I am on a blog titling streak. Anyway time to get on with this post...

Yesterday morning Eric and I loaded up Bumblebee and Cordelia and went for a walk down by the river. We were busy talking about important things like Eastern European cinema, strange ways to make friends here, our project for Andy Mason, people walking around in red robes (we saw one, don't know what the deal was), and everything else that came to mind. All of a sudden I stopped, could I have seen what I thought I saw? I made Eric look with me and we agreed that my eyes were not deceiving me. We were both looking at a peacock roaming freely through the woods. Peacocks are indigenous to the Indian subcontinent ( trust me I checked wikipedia) and not to Wyoming. So, who knows what that was all about.

After our walk we headed out to the SUPER FLEA a flea market that was indeed super. When we walked in the door I told Eric that I really just wanted to find some Russel Wright to add to my collection. We began to wander the aisles which held everything from antiques and collectibles to crafty stuff (Wyoming style).

Photobucket

At one booth a strange man jokingly (I am 99.87% sure he was joking) offered to trade me several pieces of jewelry for Cordelia. I did not take him up on his offer, even though he seemed quite nice. I assured him we were pretty attached to her.

We had a good time looking around, there were plenty of people to watch and I am sure fun was had by all. One booth in particular had Russel Wright. We inquired about the prices and she sold us this set (below) for $2. What a steal!

Photobucket

What did you do yesterday?

A Bit -o-Everything

Today I am feeling a bit like I don't want to write about any one subject for very long. My brain is just sort of bouncing around from one thought to the next. So, enjoy a little sampling of what's going on in my brain.

Last night we were sitting around the living room, Cordelia was sound asleep in her bouncer and we were just chatting. After a while our conversation turned to inward reflection. Eric seemed to be deep in thought. When he came to he said, "You know what word I really like? Kaboom." Now I wonder about all of those times when he looks like he his mulling over the problems of the world that maybe he is just thinking those kind of thoughts...which I suppose I prefer.

Photobucket
Cordelia is growing. She's moving out of the teeny tiny newborn clothes. She smiles, she can hold her head up for longer periods of time, she laughed in her sleep (but not yet when she's awake), she's starting to try and grab for things with little success.

I think that I need to make banana bread today. Just seems like a banana bread type of day.

Next month Eric and I will have been vegan for 9 years! I remember celebrating one month.

Also happening next month Eric and I will have been a couple for 12 years! We're hoping to have that be our first post-baby date night. My parents are more than willing to watch her. I think that maintaining our great marriage will be the best gift we can give to Cordelia.

Last night I slept with my hair in a couple of braids and now I have fancy wavy hair. It feels sort of like I should do something special since my hair looks special.

What random thoughts are bouncing around your brain today?

Hair, Unitards and the Death of a Dream

What does super long hair have to do with unitards you may be wondering. Well my friend let me tell you a tale...

Several years ago, as in maybe a decade. I had short hair. I always had short hair. I was always cutting it and coloring it. I had never had long hair. Eric and I were talking about it, who knows why, and we made a friendly wager. He bet that I couldn't grow my hair all the way to my bum because I was too impatient to wait for it. Well I took that bet. What would I win if I managed to get my hair to grow that long? Eric promised to publicly wear a spandex unitard just like Freddie Mercury.

So, for the past decade I have grown my hair, desperately trying to get it to the length reserved only for women in cults. I have tried it all, but it has reached it's max length.

I have to give it up. My hair will never reach my bum, oh Crystal Gale how did you do it? So Eric can rest easy knowing that there is no spandex unitard looming in his future.

Now, don't assume this means I am off to go and get a hair cut. I just need to face reality. Really, it's liberating.
