On Napping and Sleep Talking

I have never been a napper. I have a very busy brain and I feel as though I am missing out on life when I take a nap. Well, that was until recently. I have developed the ability to snooze at random and not just in the dark of night.

My current napping location is on the couch with Bumblebee as my napping partner. I nestle up in some pillows, drape myself with an afghan and get busy with sleep. I feel like I have crossed some barrier into a world that, until recently, has only been something of a tall tale. I didn't think naps were possible, not really.

Eric has been really pleased with my new found napping abilities and he loves to photograph the event. A few days ago as I was settling in for a good nap I was startled awake by the beep beep beep of the self-timer on the camera. My dear husband forgot to turn it off before photographing my snooze.

Speaking of sleep. Are you a sleep talker? I am not really. I used to annoy my cousin by pretending to talk in my sleep when we had sleep overs. I thought it was hilarious and she was not amused. Anyway, while I may occasionally mumble in my sleep I am always in the presence of sleep talkers.

Sometimes in the middle of the night I will hear Bumblebee huffing, puffing, groaning and barking as she has some wild adventure in her dreams. Also, I don't know if she is sleep walking or not, but from time to time, she will get up in the dark of night, wander into the guest room and grumble and moan before coming back to her bed. She may just be telling the cats to keep it down. I am just not sure. How can you tell if an animal is walking in their sleep?

Finally, the event that prompted this entire blog. The other night my dear husband was sound asleep when he released what can only be described as a giggle. Not a laugh, not a chuckle, a full on girlish giggle. Stunned I asked, "What's so funny?"

There was a pause and then he responded," Pin stripes." He followed it up with a second girlish giggle.

It was over as quickly as it had begun. When I asked him about it the following morning he had absolutely no recollection of the event. Being married is such fun.

Are you a napper, sleep talker or sleep walker?

I too believed that napping was for toddlers and the elderly until I hit my mid-20s. I don't know what happened, but I began to cave into the napdom.
One of my former companions would laugh regularly in his sleep. The first time it woke me up I thought he was crying, but I realized he was cracking up. Over the 4 years we lived together it would ebb and flow, but would always be there. Sometimes he remembered why, sometimes not. I loved it.
The irony of this is that I left him because I thought he didn't take things seriously enough. How funny.

Congratulations upon entering the wonderful world of naps. They are few and far between these days for me, but they are so nice when I do get them. And yes, I am a sleep talker and walker. I don't sleepwalk very often, but a few times growing up I was found curled up with our cats at the foot of my parents' bed.

Eric's giggle about pin stripes is pretty funny by the way!

Too funny. I am not a napper, but wish I was. I only took naps for the first 2 weeks after Grace was born, and not since. Is there a technique for being able to learn to nap? As for sleep talkers, I have a close girlfriend that talks frequently in her sleep. It is always quite entertaining when we are away together. In Florida, at 3 am, she woke up startled, sat up straight in her bed and yelled out "We're late!" then quickly fell back asleep. I was so startled I was up for an hour...

I am a wanna-be napper. If I'm laying down with Diego for his nap I might snooze for a few minutes. It's nice and I should do it more often, I just like to have a break in the day so I always get up.

Jim's a sleep talker and I love it. The last thing he said while sleeping was something along the lines of "HA! But that's my yard stick." He never makes sense!

Enjoy your naps!! You're very lucky to have such a nice napping buddy, too.

Ahhh.. I miss the days of a great nap! Now if I get a few moments to lay down, as soon as my face hits the pillow little Fritz is sure to wake up and need me!

Napping with dogs is the best! :) I didn't really start it up until I graduated from college and began working 12 hour nights, but it can be so refreshing just to crash for 45 minutes or so. I'm a sleep talker, too, especially in situations where you DON'T want to talk in your sleep... like say when you're in class and fell asleep with your head on your desk. Not that I've ever done that or anything.

I would absolutely nap during the day if I could, when I get a chance sometimes on the weekend I just relish curling up in bed, curtains closed, and drifting off. It's sublime.

Gosh, I love napping!! I wish I could take them at work... I'd continually be a happier person. I'm a bit of a sleep talker (I'm told) too, although I don't know that is true anymore.

oohhhhh, i love a good nap. especially if my house is clean, so i can wake up to a clean house. (this means i don't often get to nap).

one night, after ben and i had been married a month or two, i was wakened from a very deep sleep by a large arm grabbing me and yanking me across the bed. i screamed. ben gruffly asked, 'WHAT'S wrong?" i didn't know. he had grabbed me! turned out, in his sleep, he had been absolutely certain that i was falling off the bed and he needed to save me . . .

I'm totally a napper - well, when I have the time. I'm a preferred all-the-time napper, with the habit of the-occasional napper. And I think having pooches help increase the cravings for naps! On a Saturday afternoon, there's nothing better than a nap in the hammock or on the couch with the pooch, and a cool breeze after yoga!
