A Little Something Extra

When we were waiting for Cordelia to arrive Eric and I did as many parents-to-be do. We daydreamed about things that might happen in the future; the first time she says mom or dad, her first steps, what an average day might be like, and what she might do when Eric comes home from work in the evenings.

When she was first born she didn't much care about anything beyond the basics, but slowly those little moments we had once anticipated have started to happen, but they often come with a little something extra...

I heart daddy

Eric was out of town earlier this week, overnight. I was wondering how much Cordelia had noticed the passage of time or if she'd be extra enthusiastic when Eric came home. We spent yesterday quietly going about our business as we awaited his return. Naps and feedings and changes, nothing out of the usual. She didn't indicate to me that she had noticed that it had been a longer than usual period of time since she had seen her father. When he finally pulled up Bumblebee started the festivities by twirling and howling with joy. Cordelia laughed hysterically at Bumblebee's antics. Then he came through the door. Whoa! Cordelia let out three shrill screams of joy. Then came the little something extra, she puked. I guess she was a little too excited. She didn't seem phased by the gross mess rolling down the front of her shirt, she was SO happy to see her father. These are the things that no parent-to-be can expect, but they really color and personalize the whole experience.

So sweet. I bet her excitement so blessed his heart.

Funny how we all selectively remove any icky stuff from our anticipations, then find that most of baby care is icky stuff :)
