The Kindness Bandit: A Better Bill

I don't know about you but when I first moved out on my own paying bills was such a thrill for me. I think mostly it was because it meant I was out in the world on my own, making my own money, etc. I used to even be excited to buy my own toilet paper. Over the years the thrill has certainly waned.

Now when I pay bills it is with significantly less enthusiasm. I have decided that I need to remedy this. I should be thankful that I am able to support myself and that I have a place to live at all. Sunday as I sat at the table watching my paycheck dissolve into thin air I began to wonder about my mood. After all of the bills were paid a subtle melancholy stuck around.

Yesterday it struck me that this melancholy was ridiculous. I need to change my attitude about the whole process and get back to being thankful that I am able to work at all. How to make bill paying fun? That was the challenge.

Soon I decided that the best thing to do was to think about the person who has to open my bill, it's completely boring to them (I imagine, but maybe it's a joy). I decided that to make bill paying fun for me I will make bill opening fun for someone else. I found a few sites with quotes about happiness. I have printed out the quotes, fortune cookie style and plan to enclose them into all of the bills I pay in the future. See I am already looking forward to the next billing cycle (sort of).

I invite you to submit your Kindness Bandit deeds (with photos if at all possible) and I will feature them on an upcoming posting of the Kindness Bandit. Just remember to be creative and to be kind! Additionally, I will link to your blog or website. Please submit your Kindness Bandit activities to maria @ planetwimmer.com
In the mean time I will continue on with the Kindness Bandit as always!!!

Ha! That's great - now I'd have to return to mailing my bills to be paid to make that work. My income disappears into bill paying online (I have tried hard to go paper free). How could we make online bill paying fun??

Yes, we're online billing as much as possible, but there are a few places that still refuse to cross over to the modern era.

I have had the same feelings about paying bills. What was once a fun and exciting sit down time for me has now become a chore... and depressing! You know, sometimes I time myself and see how fast I could pay my bills all at once. It gets kind of fun that way. Oh, and I write letters to my landlady telling her how beautiful the flowers she planted are, or how the backyard is so awesome to hang out in now that it's Spring. It makes giving her the big ol' rent bill a little more thankful.

I have a confession. Even after 10 years of having my very own bills, I still love paying them! Yes, of course it sucks to have the money go 'bye, bye' but it still says grown-up to me! te-he..

What a great idea - imagine the happiness that you will bring to a person's otherwise mundane job!
